Wilderness Crafts Workshops

A series of mid-week crafts workshops run by Joe O'Leary designed as a private one to one experience or for small groups of up to four people.

Traditional crafts tie in perfectly with bushcraft and survival training and should be viewed as a valuable extension to your knowledge; the next level of an existing foundation of skills. Following the same principles as bushcraft, many traditional crafts utilise natural and renewable resources as their raw materials and can be achieved using simple hand tools. In many cases, the raw materials will come about through your day to day tasks around camp – bark for containers and baskets taken during tree felling, animal hides for clothing, equipment, shelter and bedding taken during the hunt. Learning how to put these by-products to good use helps to complete the jigsaw giving you a genuine depth to your knowledge of bushcraft.

Some crafts can be completed in a day but others can take two or more to do them justice. Several craft subjects can be grouped together to create a longer learning experience.

Here’s some examples…

  • Spoon or spatula whittlin’ workshop – 1 day
  • Neolithic bow workshop - 2 days
  • Carve your own wooden cup or bowl – 1 or 2 days
  • Make containers and simple folded baskets from tree bark – 1 day
  • Intensive hide tanning workshop (make your own soft, smoky buckskin from a deer skin) – 2 days
  • Make your own soft soled leather boots or moccasins – 2 days
  • Make a 3 legged stool from a log – 1 day
  • Make a wooden shave horse from a log – 3 days
  • Leather bags and pouches workshop – 1 day
  • Weave a willow fish trap – 1 day

The wilderness crafts workshops can be booked as a one to one learning experience, or for small groups of up to four people. Larger numbers and weekend dates can also be arranged.

Some of the workshops may require additional material costs (eg; leather moccasins, bags & pouches) but most rely on natural resources from the surrounding woodlands. All tools are provided.

The workshops are self-catered but tea, coffee, biscuits and fruit will always be available. For multiple day workshops, you will be welcome to camp over in the woods at no extra charge. Cooking fires are more than welcome and fire wood is plentiful and free!
