Private tuition

In between scheduled course dates, we also organise and run many bespoke courses and workshops throughout the year, such as…

1-1 training focusing on a particular skill or technique.

Private courses for small groups, one day or longer.

Corporate team building days for small or large groups.

Stag/hen days or weekends with a survival & bushcrafty theme.

The list of options is pretty extensive but here’s some ideas based on previous private bookings…

Bushcraft essentials day (a neat little package of the most important skills and knowledge, perfect for anyone just starting out) – safety with sharp tools, packing your kit and what to take, sensible survival and emergency gear and how to use it, best place to site your camp, setting up tarps and bashas, lighting fire in all weathers and safe practice, improvising from nature (making tent pegs, pot supports and hangers, bindings), keeping your tools sharp, seasonal wild foods and natural history, a selection of useful knots and lashings.

Skinning & preparing small game and fish in the field, cooking over a campfire.

Skinning & field butchery of large game (deer) – this is an extremely popular day course which also covers preserving meat in the wild, cooking techniques and a detailed talk (show & tell) on using all the butchery by-products (skin, sinew, bone, antler) for making tools, equipment and crafts.

Wild plant identification for food, medicine and many other uses.

Bow drill fire lighting master-class – take this important bushcraft skill right back to it’s roots. Gather all the materials from the woods on the day and create fire by rubbing two sticks together!

Whittle your own spoon or spatula using simple hand tools.

Carve a cup or kuksa from wood (2 days) using axe, gouge and knife.

Make a haversack, duffle or ‘possibles bag’ from leather using a rugged thong stitch construction.

Weave a fish trap from willow.

Make a container from birch bark – stitched with roots or joined with tabs and slots then lined. Tapered fit wooden base and lid.

Make a bark foraging bag – folded, stitched, stiffened rim, plant fibre cord, plaited bark or leather strap (spring and summer only).

Make your own bow and arrows – use axe, saw, drawknife, scraper. Start with a log, finish with a Neolithic style flat bow and hazel sapling arrows (3 days).

Survival trapping – learn how to make a selection of extremely effective traps using natural materials, string and simple tools.

Hide tanning master-class – learn how to naturally tan hides, go home with a soft, smoky buckskin (2 days).

Make a three legged stool from a log – using axe, bucksaw, knife and hand brace, craft yourself a solid seat for the woods.

Make your own folding bucksaw – proper mortice and tenon construction, seasoned oak timber; the perfect partner for your bushcraft axe.

Make your own stone age sewing kit using stones, bone and antler to make needles and awls

Make a foraging frame basket using willow and hedgerow plants.

Starting price per day is £200 BUT this covers two people so you can spread the cost between you.

Larger groups than the minimum two should then allow £100 per person per day. Weekend dates require a minimum of ten people in a group to book, however groups numbering more than ten will be discounted by 10%!

If your course or workshop is one that requires additional materials that can’t be gathered from the woods, this will cost a little more per person depending on the activity. All bespoke courses and workshops are self-catered unless campfire cooking is included in the syllabus.

"The guys at Wilderness Survival Skills are great, and we always love having them at our River Cottage events. Spending time with them is a fantastic way to learn new outdoor skills and discover more about the living environment around you. You'll be having such a good time you'll barely notice.  They are brilliant with children as well as adults -  my son Oscar had his 10th birthday party in the woods with his friends, doing bushcraft led by Joe and Glenn, and it was a huge hit - "one of the best days ever" he said.  We joined them for a good part of the day and had a pretty fine time ourselves!"

"DearJoe,
Just a note to say thank you SO much for putting on such a good show.
We all enjoyed ourselves immensely.  When we got back to the house you could tell that everyone felt like they'd achieved something special and there was a great atmosphere. I hope you all have a cracking Christmas and New Year. Please thank the boys for us."

"As best man, it was at first daunting to organise a decent weekend for a group of guys but Joe at Wilderness Survival was a huge help in the planning of the weekend, tailoring it to our needs and being flexible to include some additional stag fun...and making some great suggestions and planning out a weekend we all had a great time on.  Our two instructors were very easy going, clear and did a great job adding to the fun we were having.  We learned a huge amount of interesting stuff over the weekend and feel confident that if nuclear war ever breaks out we'll be ready to survive off the land!

Cracking work guys, would recommend this as a stag or hen do or anyone wanting to get to know the outdoors a bit more."

Mark, Private Stag Weekend

"Hi Joe,
Just wanted to say a massive thank you for the weekend.  It was absolutely amazing, everyone had an incredible time, and the woods were magical.
Thank you again."
