Buckskin Weekend Workshop

This traditional hide working workshop will equip you with the skills and knowledge to naturally tan hides and make rawhide, furs and pelts, bark tan leather and buckskin. Everyone who attends will work on their own deer hide leaving with a soft, smoky buckskin each.

Buckskin is an amazing material - tough but soft, virtually windproof but breathable, durable but flexible, stretching as you move. Worn by native peoples all over the world at one time or another it was the material of choice for clothing, footwear and equipment on the wild frontier for miners, workers, trappers, mountain men and all outdoors folk in the know.

Rustle free, good protection against thorns and masking the human scent, it's ideal for hunting clothing too!

Making buckskin the traditional way is physically hard, sometimes messy work, however the end result is truly worth it. The amazing transformation has been likened to woodland alchemy by previous student tanners.

The working day will begin at 9am sharp and we’ll down tools at 5pm daily (although please be prepared to stay on a bit later if needed).

If you wish to stay locally, the nearest villages to our location are Tisbury, Hindon & Chicklade. If you would like to camp over in the woods, please mention this when you book.

The Buckskin Weekend Workshop is self catered. Please bring enough food for the duration. Hot drinks, fruit and snacks are available all day. Our woodland kitchen has plenty of robust pots and pans for cooking over the campfire, as well as cool boxes and secure containers to store your food. Small, personal camp fires are absolutely fine and fire wood is plentiful and free.

In 2019 the Buckskin Weekend Workshop will be twinned once again with the popular Moccasin Workshop. Although standalone courses, there is the option of attending both combined to make an all inclusive five day workshop.

Those who opt for the combined five days will work on a slightly larger hide and use the resulting buckskin to make their moccasins from!
Numbers for all traditional craft workshops will be limited in 2019 so if you like the idea of learning to make buckskin and possibly even your own moccasins, please get in touch to book a place on this exclusive course.
