Wild Food & Cooking Autumn Weekend

Our countryside is packed with wild foods and useful plants – if you know where to look! Almost every flower, tree and mushroom has a use and a story attached. On this two day course you will live out in the woods, sleeping under a lightweight shelter and cooking over open fires. You will be shown how to identify edible and poisonous plants, learn which species are good for medicine, cordage, making fire, insect repellent, natural glues, soap and even dyes.

For the meat eaters we also cover large game field butchery during this weekend course.  You'll skin and butcher a deer carcass then be shown how to cook the haunches in an underground hangi oven using hot rocks, Maori style.  We'll talk about preserving food outdoors too with some of the venison being made into jerky.  Baking bread over a campfire is also taught, an important string to your bow.  In fact, with Autumn being a time of plenty we do a LOT of quality eating on this course.  Bring a bigger pair of trousers to go home in...

You may burn off a few calories too though, there's a lot of ground to cover – literally, so bring a good pair of walking boots and be prepared for some hiking, gathering and a bit of digging.  We always round off the weekend with a fun quiz to show you exactly how much you've learnt.

This course assembles Friday evening for an initial safety brief at 7pm and finishes at approximately 4pm on the Sunday.  This course is fully catered.

It's a good idea to bring a camera on the foraging walk to record images of the plants we don't gather, although remember you've got to carry it all day!
