Moccasin Workshop

The moccasin was, and still is renowned the world over for quietness, flexibility and just feeling closer to nature. Ellsworth Jaeger in his book ?Wildwood Wisdom? tells us that ?moccasins are “the best natural footwear that has ever been devised. The moccasined foot can feel it?s way along the trail and are light and warm at night. Moccasined feet are like the pads of animals”?. Jim Riggs author of the Blue Mountain Buckskin manual says quite simply ?”buckskin moccasins give you magic feet!"

During this three day workshop you’ll learn a lot about designing lightweight, comfortable and extremely packable foot wear, as well as making an accurate working pattern to work from. You’ll be shown several different stitches and seam types, using needle and thread and also leather thonging to sew your moccasins.

In 2020 the Moccasin Workshop will be twinned once again with the Buckskin 2 Day Workshop.

Although standalone courses, there is the option of attending both combined to make an all inclusive five day workshop. Those who opt for the combined five days will use their own finished buckskin to make their moccasins from!

If you have booked the Moccasin Workshop as a standalone course, you will be given soft and flexible grain on leather to work with (please specify a preferred colour). Paint on rubber soling, water proofing wax and leather working tools will also be provided.

The design of moccasin you choose is up to you (some are simpler than others) and although various examples of finished moccasin types and their patterns will also be available for you to be inspired by, letting your creative side loose for the weekend is definitely encouraged. We’ve had knee high boots and long distance bare foot running shoes roll off the production line in the past!

Each working day will begin at 9am sharp and we’ll down tools at 6pm daily, however please be prepared to put in some extra hours in the evening if required.

All tools, materials and hot drinks are provided however, as all craft workshops are self-catered, please bring your own food for the duration. Our woodland kitchen has plenty of robust pots and pans for cooking over the campfire, as well as cool boxes and secure containers to store your food. You would be welcome to bring a small camping stove to speed up mealtimes, however small, personal camp fires are absolutely fine and fire wood is plentiful and free.

If you wish to stay locally, the nearest villages to our location are Tisbury, Hindon & Chicklade. If you would like to camp over in the woods, please mention this when you book.

This workshop can also be booked as a private training course so if the advertised date doesn’t suit you, get in touch to choose your own. Many other crafts, wilderness living and survival skills taught here can also be covered during a private course.

Numbers for all traditional craft workshops are limited so if you like the idea of learning to make buckskin moccasins from start to finish, please get in touch to book a place on this exclusive course!
